Survey Party Chief

Job Description

Lead daily survey field operations, oversee accurate geospatial data collection, and coordinate assigned crew members for local, out-of-town, and multi-state project assignments, including extended travel as needed.

Duties/Expectations

  • Perform work under moderate supervision while exercising independent judgment and discretion as needed.
  • Lead and assist the field crew with all aspects of the daily survey workload.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of assigned survey field crew, including quality control, survey methodology, task delegation, training, and mentoring of junior-level employees.
  • Coordinate with contractors, clients, project managers, and other project stakeholders to provide survey services.
  • Work as the lead member of a survey crew performing boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS land title, right-of-way, and construction surveys for public and private clients.
  • Identify survey control, property evidence, and field conditions necessary to determine property lines and make appropriate field decisions regarding how to proceed with the survey.
  • Gather all necessary information needed to properly conduct the survey in an efficient and accurate manner.
  • Assign tasks to crew members and manage daily field operations to meet project requirements and schedules.
  • Discuss work with clients, contractors, and project representatives as necessary.
  • Perform calculations and maintain records essential to survey work.
  • Ensure assigned survey truck is properly maintained, stocked, and ready for daily field operations.
  • Maintain and inventory all assigned survey equipment.
  • Communicate with management and project teams to maximize efficiency, productivity, and billable field hours.
  • Work safely each day and ensure crew compliance with all company, client, and jobsite safety regulations.
  • Work onsite at assigned project locations, including local job sites and out-of-town or out-of-state assignments as required.
  • Be available for extended travel assignments based on project needs, including work outside of Arizona for longer-duration projects.

Experience/Qualifications

Preferred Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience required.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, construction management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of three to five years of relevant experience working on a land surveying field crew.
  • Prior Survey Party Chief experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction stakeout procedures and field practices.
  • Familiarity with field procedures for boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS land title, right-of-way, construction, road frontage cross-section, and as-built surveys.
  • Ability to perform and oversee field data collection for topographic surveys, road frontage cross-section surveys, as-built surveys, and construction layout.
  • Thorough knowledge of total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, data collectors, and related survey technologies, with the ability to adapt to new equipment and software.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to travel out of town and out of state for extended project assignments as required.
  • Availability to work overtime, extended hours, and weekends as needed based on project schedules.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.
  • Must successfully pass a motor vehicle record check, no exceptions.
