Construction Staking (Layout Survey) is a critical surveying service performed during the building process. While design plans and engineering drawings provide the vision for a project, construction staking translates those plans into precise locations on the ground. This ensures that every improvement is built in the correct location and at the correct elevation. Over time, it has become the standard practice for contractors, developers, engineers, and owners who require accuracy, efficiency, and accountability in the construction process.
Construction staking provides the field control necessary to turn design into reality and is designed to address the unique needs of builders, project managers, engineers, and property owners.
Construction staking typically addresses key questions, such as:
- The accurate location of buildings, roads, utilities, and other improvements.
- The grades and elevations required for earthwork, drainage, and structural foundations.
- Confirmation that construction aligns with the approved design plans and project specifications.
- Early identification of potential conflicts or discrepancies before they result in costly field errors.
Additionally, Construction Staking may include supplemental services — tailored items based on the scope of your project, such as:
- Rough grade staking and site control points.
- Utility layout, curb and gutter, and roadway centerlines.
- Parking lot, sidewalk, and hardscape layouts.
- As-built verification to confirm completed improvements.
- Phased staking to support multi-stage development schedules.
Important Notes:
If no specific staking scope is identified at the time of your request, your quote will reflect only the basic staking services necessary to establish site control.
Should additional staking needs arise during construction, the contract and/or quote will be revised accordingly.
While not required, it is highly recommended that you upload your civil or construction plans with your submittal. Doing so allows our Registered Land Surveyor and field crews to review design requirements thoroughly and provide a more accurate quote.
For additional reference, you may review your jurisdiction’s construction specifications or consult with your project engineer to determine all necessary staking items for your project.
